Tu Face And the Million Dollar Question
Tuesday, 30.10.2007, 03:56pm (GMT)

On a regular day, the song I would most likely enjoy would be one of Tu Face's offerings from his latest album. Love him or loathe him, that guy is a phenomenon (at least the rest of Africa and the world think so).

There is something so haunting about his musical style that one can't ignore. If one attempts to look beyond the "noting dey happen" facade of his, one would discover a young man who really loves his nation and is passionately trying to change certain aspects of governance that he finds unattractive. Not so long ago, the man with strong Idoma roots was shot at home in Festac. Though the incident caused quite a stir, it was assumed by quite a number of watchers that he was a victim of a routine armed robbery attack (one helluva routine, if you ask me). We came to the conclusion that he just found himself at the wrong place, but this recent shooting demands more than a raised eyebrow from all and sundry.

We should attempt to unravel the greatest Who dunn it mystery in the history of the nation (forget about the unsolved "Who killed Dele Giwa? mystery). Who hates Tu Face? Who cannot stand to see the young man succeed? I wish there could be straightforward answers to these questions, but the fact is that this young man has his hand in so many pies that one cannot really tell which of the pies is poisoned (get my drift?). As an armchair detective, I am giving myself and like - minded individuals the awesome task of trying to unravel the attempted killers of Mr. Tu Face Idibia who is as complicated as they come.

Let's start from his days as an undergraduate. It is rumoured that he was an influential member of a group of "fine" boys. If you are a bit confused by my terminology, you should at least know that the word fine does not have anything to do with his looks. As an infamous "fine" boy, one dangerous individual or the other may have an axe to grind with him. Another potential dangerous individual to consider is a former band member. We were overwhelmed by the face-off with his erstwhile buddy "Faze," a former member of the group "Plantation Boyz" in which he was the lead singer. The group disbanded long ago, but Faze was really emotional about the break-up for so long that he released two songs, one after the other. These songs had recurring themes about the attendant problems of the separation.

The big question is this, could Faze be cruel enough to attack him (Don't remind me about the fact that his elder brother was with Tu Face during the attack. Could be a strategy for all you know). Has Faze still not forgiven him for the break-up? Another angle we should explore to unravel all this, is the fact that Tu Face must have broken a lot of hearts along the way. We are aware of his legendary exploits with members of the fairer sex. Did any of them get really broken-hearted? Did that lady also attempt to get rid of him? Your guess is as good as mine. As much as I have been accused of being unfair to Nigerian politicians, I cannot help but to mention this fact. We know that Idibia is a lyrical political activist. In his latest outing, in no uncertain terms he "yabbed" Nigerian politicians as well as the ruling class. In the song, 4 Instance "he bared his mind about them.

Here goes: Their looting no dey give us assurance, repentance no dey their plans, e dey create annoyance for my hands. In track five of that album, he hits directly at politicians in this way: As you see me so I no send, I no send all of the wicked politicians. Could one of the "wicked" politicians be responsible for this attack on him? I certainly do not expect any response from members of the Nigerian Police Force who are highly disgruntled and unimaginative, but maybe the management of Kennis Music can enlighten us as we attempt to unravel this great mystery. Is there something brewing between Tu Face and Kennis Music? In the past, the musician was only too happy to depend totally on Kennis Music, but these days, he seems to be shifting his affections somewhat.

What is this thing we hear about Hypertek Entertainment coming onto the scene? Is someone in Kennis Music not happy with our Idoma friend? Well, till we figure that one out let us reassure ourselves with the fact that these things are meant to happen. A man like Tu Face would always be involved in controversial circumstances. If he was just an average musician, he would have been left alone but fame has its attendant pains. Famous people are bound to have as many enemies as they have friends, but I am sure the family and friends of Idibia are praying for his attackers to chill out so as to afford him the opportunity to stay with us for a while longer.
