Akon " So What if I Have Three Wives? "
Tuesday, 15.05.2007, 09:15pm (GMT)

Music star Akon admitted his record company has put a gagging order on him after he admitted to having three wives. The rapper, originally from Senegal, told radio interviewer Angie Martinez he was "a polygamist" who could "afford to have as many wives as I can afford to have". However, the comments didn't go down well with Universal, who have now banned him from talking about it further - which Akon claims exposes the 'Land of the Free's' inherent hypocrisy.

He told entertainment portal AllHipHop.com, "After me and Angie had that conversation, situations started getting heated. It started affecting other people that had nothing to do with us. "Because of that, [the label] said they don't want me to promote that aspect, and I can't talk about that too much because it's destroying other people's families and other things. I said, 'Ok, no problem.' I gave them the word to where I won't promote it too much, to where it won't be a topic to where it starts getting tainted into those situations. Unfortunately, this is the world we live in, people do judge you by your beliefs and how you think. It's a free country, but it's really not free."

Akon continued: "I really don't bite my tongue for anybody and I always felt like if you're going to be real, you got to be truthful all the way around the board. Lies only make things worse. But it got to a point where my coming out like that ended up being a mistake. I started getting calls from higher powers; people who were actually above me, practicing it. They were like, "We can't control what you say out in the road, but it's bringing a lot of negativity towards our homes." So out of respect for them, I said ok, I won't have those kinds of conversations." Akon said in the music business, it's not just Muslims doing it. "You got Jews that practice it and all that kind of stuff. I think the average guy is doing right now. He's just not married. Everybody that I hang with have multiple girlfriends. So we felt like we could use that opportunity to discuss issues with boyfriends, girlfriends, why guys do what they do and have open conversations on relationships. Most girls, when they have an issue with their man, it's because there's another girl in the picture."

When asked if he was living with multiple wives, he answered: "Come on, you can't live with the women if you're going to do it. It would ruin a situation like that. [On Angie's show], I didn't think the conversation all the way through because I didn't think it was that serious. I just thought it was a way to open up the channels of communication so people could honestly talk. Then it just went to a whole other level. People started putting a spin to it. "Oh, he got all of these wives that actually live with him." By the time it got to Atlanta, it was crazy! So they shut us down for a minute on it. But we're working on a show that we could probably attack those situations on in the future."

In a second controversy, the R&B singer apologized last Wednesday for an underage liaison that drove phone company Verizon Communications Inc. to drop its sponsorship of a tour featuring the chart-topping artist. Last month, during a concert in Trinidad, Akon engaged in a raunchy on-stage dance with 15-year-old fan. After video of the romp circulated online, Verizon this week pulled out of pop singer Gwen Stefani's 'Sweet Escape' tour, on which Akon is the opening act. "First, and most important to me, I want to sincerely apologize for the embarrassment and any pain I've caused to the young woman who joined me on-stage, her family and the Trinidad community for the events at my concert in Port of Spain on April 12th," Akon said in a statement.

"It was never my intention to embarrass or take advantage of my fans in any way, especially those under the age of 18. That is why we tried to make sure that the club did not admit anyone under 18 in the audience. Somehow, that standard was not met." A spokesman for Live Nation, which is promoting the Stefani tour, said Akon would remain on the bill, and that no new sponsor had come aboard.

Akon, born Aliaune Thiam in Senegal, topped the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart twice in the past year, first in November with "I Wanna Love You" and then in March with "Don't Matter." His current album, "Konvicted," peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200.
