Blu*3 and Montell Jordan Spice Up Kampala Friday, 27.07.2007, 12:13am (GMT)
As you might already know, the all girl singing trio, Blu*3, are launching their second and 17 track album - Burrn - tomorrow evening. And to make this launch more special, the girl's manager/producer Steve Jean partnered with Club Rouge/Tight Security proprietor Aly Alibhai, and with the help of 'a gazillion' of people, the two men managed to convince American singer/song writer - who had a number of Rn'B hits especially in the mid 90's - Montell Jordan, to come down here and be a part of the girls' big night. When I met Blu*3 last week at Steve Jean's Fenon Studios, it was eight days to July 21. They were both excited and anxious; too anxious in fact, they didn't want to give away any information concerning the show apart from the facts that we already know like; Montell would be there, the album to be launched is titled Burrn, it has a wide assortment of songs; reggae, Rn'B, new and old skool sounds...et al, and that they hope people of all age groups come for the show, in big numbers." But how about the juicy bits of the show? Why not give people a sneak peak, because if they are to come in big numbers, they need to know what to expect, I argue. "Most of these things are still 'bedroom matters', so we can't give them away to even the press until Saturday night," Jacky, who then had a slight fever and headache, assures. Adding; "It's like telling everyone, a night before your wedding day, each and every detail about your wedding gown. The truth is that when they see you the following day, in that very glamorous gown, there won't be a wow effect because they already know all about it," she argues. And in unison the girls affirm, "We want the people to have that wow effect come Saturday night." But after a lot of coaxing and talking about this and that, the girls who are, until towards the end of the interview, only Jacky and Cindy - Lillian is still caught up at Capital Radio where she co-hosts the breakfast show - agree to dish on the album launch, but consciously. "This show is going to be special and like no other we have had before because we are going to perform as Blu*3 and also individually as Cindy, Jacky and Lillian," Cindy and Jacky start. "It is going to be terrifying but also exciting to stand on that stage and sing as individuals for the first time ever." Later, while talking about the future of the girls and whether they plan to go solo any time- soon or later, Jacky confesses that this is her biggest fear, generally. "I can't imagine having to perform a complete song on my own, by myself. I would get freaked out." I guess we will have to wait and see how she fares tomorrow. The girls also promise that to ensure that the show begins and ends on time (midnight) as planned, they are not having many curtain raisers. A maximum of three curtain raisers will perform and the other performances will only be from Blu*3 and guest performer Montell Jordan. Whether Blu*3 is going to share the stage with Montell; to do a song together, and if that song will be one of his or theirs, or recorded especially for the four of them, the girls simply won't tell. "Maybe, maybe not," Jacky answers to all these queries with a mischievous, girly smile. Again, we will have to wait and see. But one thing is for sure; these girls should be in position to put up a great show tomorrow night. They say all performances will be live; a band (they will not say which one) has been flown in especially for the big night and for once we are going to hear their real voices. Plus, they have been rehearsing day and night, going through their choreography for about two weeks now, and it was intense. When Lillian joins the girls later, she confesses that she has muscle aches in parts of her body that she didn't even know muscles existed. And it is not just the girls working around the clock in preparation for the show, it is everyone involved; Steve Jean's Fenon studios/offices were buzzing with activity. Steve Jean was on the phone constantly giving directives; many things to put together and so little time, so it seemed. The costume designers (Sylvia Owori's people) were also as busy making sure that, an undisclosed, number of costumes are ready and on time. While the girls did this interview, they alternately went for costume fitting. It is going be their biggest night ever, they say, and they hope you all attend because all the work that has gone into preparing tomorrow's show, the "three level stage" on which the girls promise to bring back 'music' into Ugandan music shows, is all just for you. On whether there will be CD auctioning, Jacky says; " If you want to buy our album at Shs50m, thank you very much, we are very grateful. But no, we are not auctioning any CDs. There is going to be a CD selling point at the show grounds and all the CDs there go for only Shs15,000."
