History of the MTV Africa Music Awards

In 2006 a new award category was created in the MTV Europe Music Awards, the Best African artiste as a way of recognizing the increasing relevance of African music in the world. The first recipient was Nigeria’s R & B maestro, Tuface Idibia. In 2007 the award was given to Nigerian hip-hop artist, D’Banj.

In 2008 however, MTV, recognizing that the current of African music was too great to be submerged under another continental award, created the MTV Africa Music Awards with Zain (now Airtel) to celebrate excellence in African music.

The first edition was held in Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja on November 22, 2008; it was anchored by MTV VJ Trevor Nelson at the Velodrome. The Artist of the Year award was given to Nigeria’s D’Banj.

The 2009 edition was held at the Daniel Arap Moi International Sports Centre on October 10; it was anchored by Wyclef Jean. The Artist of the Year award was also clinched by D’Banj?.
